High Risk Obstetrics Q & A
What is a high-risk pregnancy?
A high-risk pregnancy might sound scary, but the goal of placing you in a high-risk group is to closer monitor your pregnancy, avoid any problems, and act quickly should an issue arise.
High risk obstetrics is geared toward identifying and mitigating any risk that threatens the health of you or your baby. Typically, your risk is assessed based on:
- Medical history
- Behaviors: Such as poor diet, alcohol, drugs, or cigarette use
- Preexisting conditions: Diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, and kidney disease, etc.
- Age: Younger than 17 or older than 35 automatically puts you in the high-risk category
- Multiple babies in the womb
- An infection, such as HIV or herpes, that can be passed to your baby during pregnancy and delivery
- Detected a genetic condition or health problem with your fetus
- History of miscarriages or previous difficult births
Depending on your unique clinical picture, Dr. Siudmak, Aissel Faquir, DNP, or Angela Momprevil, DNP may place you in high-risk category for closer monitoring.
